amtrak routes between virginia's tidewater area and newport news have been canceled because of the coming storm. these are live pictures from wrightsville beach, north carolina. many tourists and residents have left north carolina's outer banks. it's still unclear how close the strongest winds and heaviest surge will get to north carolina's fragile chain of barrier islands. tom is here now to tell us what he sees going on right now and some changes happening as we speak. >>> it looks like the winds are picking up at wrightsville beach. you can see the camera bouncing around, and the surf is getting rougher at wrightsville beach, north carolina. well, let's take a look across the tropical atlantic. we've got three named storms. we've got the major hurricane earl and then far to the south and east of that is a rather disorganized tropical storm, fiona. and that, though, is showing a little more organization as it moves off to the north, and that will likely stay way out to sea and not threaten the atlantic seaboard. farther to the east is gaston. it is a tropical storm and it's heading due

are a little bit color. petersburg, west virginia near 100. it is the 53rd time that the airport has hit 90 or better this year. we are 1 away from tying the record of 54 for a number of days in the 90's in a single year. it looks like we will tie that tomorrow and probably go past that as we work our way through september. 65-77 for the overnight low, but things are about to change. it will stay clear tonight, and a good deal of sun tomorrow, but to weather systems -- two weather systems showing aea up. rl is one of three tropical systems -- earl is a power pack, category 4 storm. it has gone back between category three and four. the water is very warm here and is moving into favorable conditions. the eye has tightened up. it is a category 4 storm with winds over -- wind over155 make it a category five. it is just east of cape had it -- take hatter's as we go into the early morning hours friday. it is sitting out there over the warm waters of the atlantic. instead of moving more toward us, it will take a turn to the northeast. the front coming in from the mountains will help to keep it out

to really feel it. maryland tropical storm warning issued from virginia through the jersey area. that means tropical storm forced winds are expected within the next 48 hours. that is anything from 39 to 74- mile-an-hour winds. to the west. there's the showers showers and thunderstorms. here's earl. pretty much the same as you can see, as it heads off to the the carolinas. still off our coast. with a 3 or perhaps strong 2 category storm. right now, up to 132. a little further to the east. not going to impact anybody as it heads out not north and northeast. and just a minute ago, gaston, a new tropical storm heading out to the west, with winds of 40. yes, the tropics are going crazy. tonight, cooler and quiet nice night again. but warmer than last night. another very, very warm day. with increase in high clouds. particularly tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow's high, about 92 degrees. we'll update the five-day forecast. with gaston and fiona and earl coming up. >> all right, bob. thank you. >>> still ahead at 5:00, wjz continues to monitor the breaking news at the discovery channel headquarters. th
